潘烈文的研究主要集中于引起人类健康问题的新出现和重新出现的病毒，例如SARS冠状病毒、新冠病毒、中东呼吸综合症病毒和人类与动物的流感病毒。他采用“健康一体”概念来研究动物与人类界面上的新兴病毒。他开发了多种针对新出现的人畜共患流感病毒的分子测试，例如对H5N1、2009人类型猪流感和H7N9流感病毒的测试。他在2003年参与SARS冠状病毒的发现和研究，并是最早破译SARS冠状病毒序列的人之一。他其后在野生动物中发现了许多不同冠状病毒，其中包括第一种蝙蝠冠状病毒。他在2009年H1N1流感大流行中在猪体内鉴定出了大流行H1N1/2009病毒的第一个重配体。他在新冠大流行期间作出重大的科学贡献，并将这些科学发现应用于公共卫生实践。他还对疫苗学研究有着浓厚的兴趣。

荣誉表彰

潘烈文是香港青年科学院的创始成员之一，并在2017年获得裘槎基金会颁发的裘槎优秀科研者奖。
