英国大学

英国大学，指大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国的大学，是全世界教学及研究的整体水平和平均水平最高的大学群体之一。英国大学拥有英国皇家特许状、教宗诏书和议会法案，并有在英国枢密院备案，英国政府规定只有这样的机构才能颁发学位。截止到2016年，英国共有163所公立高等教育院校。根据2016年QS世界大学排名，共有10所英国大学进入世界前50，18所进入世界前100，30所进入世界前200名。英国大学都是独立自治的机构，尽管它们主要的经费是由英国的高等教育拨款委员资助，但是它们不属于任何政府部门的管辖和控制。它们拥有皇家宪章或议会法案给予的特权，可以自身决定自己招收的学生和应聘的职员。但是政府在某些方面已经开始干涉，比如大学经费是受到政府严格规定的。

英格兰：牛津大学（Oxford）和剑桥大学（Cambridge）。这两个大学最突出的特点是它们的学院制度。学院完全自主它们的财产，政务和内部事务，但是大学授予学位和确定能被授予学位的学生条件，学生只有被学院接受才能成为该所属大学的学生。举例说，申请剑桥大学，要选择剑桥大学中的一个学院申请。如果没有被学院接受，则不能被剑桥大学录取而成为它的一员。所以只有其中一个学院接受，才能成为剑桥的学生。同样值得注意的是，这些学院并不代表科系。

苏格兰：圣安德鲁斯大学、格拉斯哥大学、阿伯丁大学和爱丁堡大学。

爱尔兰：都柏林圣三一大学。

红砖大学

红砖大学（Red Brick University）包括布里斯托大学、谢菲尔德大学、伯明翰大学、利兹大学、曼彻斯特大学和利物浦大学，以及其他一些“准红砖大学”。

伦敦大学

伦敦大学

这十所新的大学是罗宾斯1963年的高等教育报告的结果。斯特拉斯克莱德大学和赫瑞瓦特大学前身为苏格兰中央学术机构，其均为先进科技院校。

英国开放大学

开放大学是一个在线式的远程教育大学。它于1969年得到皇家宪章。它没有正式的入学要求进入本科课程，是专门为那些不能在现有的高等教育机构学习深造的学生而设并帮助他们实现理想。教学手段有：书面教材，面对面老师授课，短期寄宿学校，广播，电视，录音带，录像带，电脑和家庭试验配套。该大学还提供持续教育课程，包括在职教师培训，管理人员培训，同样为社区教育提供短期的科学技术课程，这种形式的教学始于1971年。

私立大学

白金汉大学是一个私人融资机构。它第一个被承认的学生在1976年2月。它早在1983年得到了皇家宪章并被命为白金汉宫大学。这大学仍然是私人融资并提供为期两年的课程，每年包括四个学期，10个星期。主要授课领域有：法律，会计，科学和经济学，现可授学士学位，并有权颁发硕士学位。

中世纪大学

《泰晤士报》（The Times）是英国媒体中最早发布英国大学排名的单位，自1992年起每年发布Times大学排名。该排名的主要指标包括学生满意度（15%）、生师比（10%）、生均经费（10%）、设施和设备（10%）、优秀学位获得率（10%）、毕业率（10%）等指标。自2014版起，《泰晤士报》和《星期日泰晤士报》合并发布英国大学排名。

《完全大学指南》（Complete University Guide）英国大学排名由著名的英国报社《独立报》（Independent）参与制订，首次发表于2007年，该排名的所有数据来源于英国高等教育统计署，《完全大学指南》2010年的英国大学排名基于以下九个指标：学生满意度、研究质量、入学标准、师生比例、学术服务开支、学校设施开支、优等学位比例、毕业率和就业率。此外，《完全大学指南》还对英国大学按照不同的专业进行排名。
